THE CHOSEN ONESCuphea hyssopifolia - This beautiful plant with small, shiny, dark green leaves covered with small purple flowers blooms throughout the summer and tolerates hot, dry conditions very well. It forms an intense mound of foliage, approximately 18-24 inches tall. It is extensively used in containers and perennial bed plantings. The lavender color of the flowers give a dazzling look with other flowers in yellow, white, or blue. These annuals prefer well-drained soil and full sun. Hyacinth bean - Amazingly decorative & attractive vine especially for hot-dry areas. The vines grow up to 30 feet long, but are usually around 15 feet. Vines are the best choice to use as a ground cover or to cover a trellis or fence. The red-purple stems with spikes of fascinating rose-colored flowers and reddish-purple bean pods are the best attention grabbers. The colorful young pods are edible, too! The leaves are oval and pointed at the tip. Hyacinth bean requires warm soil to germinate well, preferably with well-drained, evenly moist soil. Salvia - Stunningly beautiful flowers of salvia produces the light scent typical of sage plants. The flowers bloom in colors of red, blue, and white. Salvia enjoys sunny locations, consistent watering, pruning, and fertilizing to stimulate nonstop blooms and lush foliage. Salvia grows up to 18 inches high and 12 inches wide at maturity. Moss Rose - A hardy annual with beautiful flowers of 2 to 3 inches, rose-like blooms and medium green colored foliage will amaze your neighbors with its stunning beauty. Flowers open throughout the day and close up at night. Moss rose flowers appear in red, yellow, pink, white, or orange on stem tips. Moss rose tolerates heat and is a perfect choice to grow in sites that has poor soil characteristics. However, moss rose prefers soil with good drainage, full sun, and regular watering for best flowering results. Nasturtium - Nasturtium, a plant with round, light green leaves is an interesting vine used as a ground cover or in fence. Some cultivars have flowers that range in color from pale creamy-yellow to dark reddish-orange. Nasturtium is preferred to grow in poor low fertility well drained soils, full sun and supplements like fertilizer will respond with beautiful leaves but fewer flowers! |
